Amazon next Internet video shop to look at original content

updated 07:30 pm EST, Fri February 10, 2012

Amazon hires for own TV shows

Two new job listings have hinted that Amazon will be the next commercial Internet video service to produce some of its own content. Its studio division is hiring for the People's Production Company to create comedies and children's shows. Unlike its counterparts, though, it would be developing for traditional formats as well.

Amazon's strategy is known to involve a pseudo-open-source method where ideas come from a collective of artists rather than full-time, dedicated writers. It has been working on self-produced content on a basic level since 2011, but hasn't shown signs of getting close to publication until now.

The progress has Amazon following Netflix and Hulu into producing its own video material with its Internet service in mind. All three are likely to be developing the material to reduce their dependency on outside movie and TV studios for material. As many of the studios are often trying to shelter their old businesses through delaying or withholding content, having unique material lets them have something that appears faster and more reliably.

Apple has so far been the conspicuous holdout from the group. It may not need the material, however, since its business model is a more direct equivalent to the disc model and generates similar revenue. [via GigaOM]
