Double Fine gets game to $1m funding through Kickstarter

updated 08:15 pm EST, Thu February 9, 2012

Dev more than doubles original target

Double Fine Productions has surpassed its Kickstarter funding goal in just eight hours since the developer began accepting pledges to help create an adventure game and a documentary to chronicle the experience. The project has achieved over $1 million in investment pledges, more than doubling the original goal of $400,000.

The company, which was founded by Monkey Island writer Tim Schafer, is known for several games such as Brutal Legend, Once Upon a Monster, and Trenched. The Kickstarter funding will allow Tim to assemble a small team of Double Fine staff to build a "classic point-and-click adventure."

Anyone who pledges $15 will be able to download the final game, which will be published through Steam, along with the PC beta releases. The developers will also release monthly videos documenting the production process.

"Double Fine is committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived," the Kickstarter pitch reads.

A variety of additional rewards are available for individuals who pledge more than $15, ranging from HD videos to posters and portraits of the backer painted by the game's artist. The project is expected to be completed within a six- to eight-month period.
