Rogers intros One Number for mobile, PC accounts

Rogers allows calls from PCs with One Number

Rogers has brought out a new One Number is a new service for the carrier's wireless customers who want to use their computers to talk, text, and video chat from their computers using their cellphone number. The service is free for subscribers and includes a unified inbox for e-mails, calls, and texts. Contacts from the phone are synced onto the website as well.

The appeal revolves around free Canada-wide calling (texts are free across the nation) and the added convenience of not always handling your mobile phone, especially in an open office environment. Users can switch calls from their phone to the computer and vice versa by clicking a button. If users are in the US or other countries outside of Canada, they can log into the Rogers One Number page to make free long-distance calls, video chats, and texts, though the recipient also needs to be a Rogers One Number user. Users also have options on which of their contacts can reach them, when, and where or how. The service will also work on tablets, though this will likely require a dedicated app.

Registration is now live and is fairly painless and secure, with a four-digit PIN sent to a user's handset to then enter into the site in order to create a log-in. A physical home address also needs to be put in to allow for emergency responders to find users in the case of 911 calls from a computer. Installing a 7.2MB client (currently for Windows) is also required and mostly rules out public computers.
