Hasbro, Nerf revive Lazer Tag with iOS-linked blasters

updated 12:15 pm EST, Tue February 7, 2012

Hasbro, Nerf make Lazer Tag an iPhone, iPod game

Hasbro and Nerf have brought Lazer Tag back with iOS as its cornerstone. While the blasters can work in multiplayer without any device, mounting an iPhone or iPod touch in a special holder gives them an app that both extends the firing range to 250 feet and introduces a HUD that shows the trajectory and ongoing stats. As many as 24 people can play at once with leaderboards that can update mid-match.

Having the Apple device's screen also opens the door to a single-player mode. The iOS device's back camera becomes an augmented reality view where players shoot at virtual targets put over the real background.

Hasbro will be selling the Lazer Tag blasters in one- and two-unit sets at prices of $40 and $70 each. Each gun needs six AA batteries to stay powered and aren't included in the box. The launch comes early and won't see the revived Lazer Tag in stores until August 1.
