Sony preps PS Vita update for February 8

Sony has teased an update for the PlayStation Vita that should significantly expand its features just a week before the North American launch. The 1.6 firmware patch will add a mapping tool with both driving and walking directions. Likely based on Google Maps, it has the options of satellite and traffic views as well as sending locations out on the Vita's own group messaging for a meetup.

Movie making will also be new and let users record video from the regular photo app. Sony wasn't forthcoming on quality or format details.

Outside of the firmware itself, Sony is promising a Mac version of its Content Management app. The desktop app will let users load media and back up their game data without having to use Windows or a PS3.

At least the 1.6 firmware will be ready by February 8. Sony didn't confirm that the Mac sync support would arrive at the same time, although it's implied that it will be ready. [via Andriasang]
