Microsoft to open Austin store on Apple turf

Microsoft Store to open at Domain in Austin

Microsoft through its Facebook page and separate confirmations has confirmed another retail store opening that will clash with an Apple location. The new store will open in northern Austin's Domain shopping center, a location Apple has occupied since 2007. It hasn't given a date or an exact position of where the store will be located.

News of the store follows just over a week after Microsoft planned a similar push Palo Alto in California, one of the closest locations to Apple's actual headquarters. The store is due to open in April.

Microsoft has slowly been shifting its strategy from considering its stores to be experiments for retail concepts to making them direct, Windows-friendly alternatives to Apple shops. As many as 75 new stores will be open in the next few years, most of which will be in the US and in many cases will either be close to or inside malls where Apple operates.

The stores in many ways emulate the Apple model, but include more diverse lineups such as Xboxes. Its PC lineup also stands out from the traditional Windows lineup by including 'signature' notebooks that aren't saddled with the usual trial apps and other unwanted content from their regular versions.

    Microsoft's continued retail push baffles me. I highly suspect its retail operations lose money, but Microsoft probably doesn't account for its retail operations it doesn't know it's losing money. And trying to company a Microsoft store to an Apple story is silly. They're not the same. Apples and oranges. No pun intended.

    Deliberating building your stores across or near an Apple store just invites comparisons ... and the resulting ridicule. You know MS are taking a financial beating on this, so by all means let them continue. I haven't heard of a single MS store being robbed ... probably because there's nothing anyone wants in one.

    the real laptop hunters

    in my area, the cops recently nabbed a pair of lowlifes who had made a short-lived career of stealing people's laptops while they were using them at coffee bars like Sbux. One guy would grab the laptop and run to the waiting car with his accomplice driving.

    In every case... they targeted Apple laptops.

    Don't sit near the door if you can help it!

    MS quite literally is clueless in how to actually market at retail. So _all_ they can do is copy. Apple does the demographics research and anchors a locale, then MS poaches. MS gets some exposure that otherwise would never happen.

    The problems are:

    a) MS is not Apple, so the actual in-store implementation should be different, and MS has no clue.

    b) MS is taking a big risk setting up for side-by-side comparisons against Apple products.

    MSoft dying

    With Balmer at the helm, MSoft, with it's continued "copy anything that Apple is successful with" mentality will certainly fade into history. How can a company SO large (at one time), have so little talent or original thought?!?
