Google HUD glasses may follow Chromebook idea

More information has been gleaned from a tipster to 9to5google regarding Google's upcoming HUD glasses. The prototype version reportedly resembles Oakley's Thump Pro sunglasses and get a front-facing camera that records info for augmented reality apps. The prototype was also said to have an integrated flash.

The tiny size of the camera suggests it will only have a few megapixels at best, while the HUD will only be visible by one eye. It isn't transparent and won't have dual 3D capability, the sources claimed, as guessed at in the original report. Users can reportedly navigate by tilting their heads slightly. Once a user is used to it, third parties will have a hard time guessing that the wearer is 'computing.'

Voice input and output will also be onboard, while the chip speed, RAM and storage space are roughly the same as an older Android smartphone. This suggests a clock speed of 1GHz or less, 256MB of RAM, and perhaps 8GB of storage.

The company may release them as part of a limited pilot program, as Google did with its Chromebooks.
