Google says it's ready to lay Kansas City 1Gbps fiber

Google begins laying down fiber optic cable

Despite a recent setback over some wiring issues, Google on Monday announced it is now laying down fiber optic cables as part of its Google Fiber project. The area in question includes Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Once complete, Google promises data speeds as high as 1Gbps, or much higher than even most commercial fiber rollouts.

Unfortunately, Google didn't provide a timeline for the completion of the project. It did state that the first order of business will include building a fiber backbone, or a main vein, before connecting individual homes to it and allowing those living in Kansas City to take advantage of the high speeds.

Google did originally state that it will have the project completed in 2012. Google no doubt would like to have the lines laid and working in time for March 30, as Kansas Governor Sam Brownback nominated the date as Google Day in the state. Kansas City was chosen from among 1,100 hopefuls for the Google Fiber project.
