Sprint creates website to show iDEN tower eliminations

updated 07:10 pm EST, Mon February 6, 2012

Claims service will still go on in affected areas

Sprint has launched a website to help its customers visualize and understand the timing of its elimination of its cell towers that support its old Nextel push-to-talk iDEN network. The site shows subscribers by area when towers in their service area will switch coverage off. Sprint will begin shutting down the service starting next year.

In December, 2010, Sprint launched its Network Vision network upgrade and simplification program. In addition to combining its 3G and 4G services to operate over the same cell towers, the carrier announced that it would be eliminating its iDEN walkie talkie-like service. In preparation of turning off that service, Sprint has begun to optimize the network while eliminating towers operating the service.

Sprint may reuse the towers to carry its regular CDMA-based services, and it already has a substitute push-to-tak system using CDMA/EVDO and should have one using LTE in the long term. [via Phone Scoop ]
