Google Docs for Android gets offline access, tablet tweaks

updated 03:40 pm EST, Wed February 1, 2012

Docs sync in background when online

Google has updated its Google Docs app for Android devices (free, Market). The app now supports offline access to files saved in Google Docs. Google has also improved the readability of Google Docs viewed on Android tablets.

Users can now pick specific items that can be stored on the viewer's phone or tablet so that they may be viewed even when they are not connected to the Internet. The app makes sure that the files are automatically updated when connected to Wi-Fi. The file can also be manually updated. Files can still be starred and renamed while offline.

The appearance of Google Docs on tablets now bings high resolution versions when connected to the Internet. Swiping either right or left turns the page. The slider at the bottom of the displayed material can be used to move forward across multiple pages. Google has not indicated whether or not pages viewed offline on tablets are also presented in high resolution, although it's implied that they're not.

Google first made its Google Docs Android app available to smartphone owners last April. Tablet owners running Android 3.0 or later received a version optimized for their devices in October.
