Samsung Galaxy GTI9070 surfaces as the Galaxy S Advance

updated 05:50 am EST, Mon January 30, 2012

New Galaxy S variant seems destined for China

The Galaxy GT-I9070 that surfaced in the past few days undergoing testing at the FCC has been given a name. Turning up in the Philippines, the new model has been dubbed the Galaxy S Advance. While originally thought to be a spin-off of the Galaxy S II, it appears like a cross between the original Galaxy S and the Nexus S, amounting to a what could be described as a Galaxy S 1.5. While it carries the same 1GHz clock speed as the Galaxy S and Nexus S, it includes a more advanced dual-core processor.

Like the original Galaxy S, it carries a 4-inch 800x480 Super AMOLED display and a 5-megapixel camera. However, it also picks up the trademark curved display that normally helps to set the Nexus line of phones apart from other Samsung models. While Samsung has switched away from having a home screen button from its US-based models, this particular design carries the iPhone-like single home screen button.

Unlike other Samsung phones with this configuration, it does not also carry the other, more typical Android buttons including back, menu or search. As originally surmised, it remains likely that this particular model may ship to China as a mid-range, or entry-level smartphone. A US launch could still occur as the device carries a US compatible 3G-radio, however, a redesign of its control scheme would almost certainly be necessary. The Galaxy S Advance ships out of the box with Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) with TouchWiz intact. [via Unwired View]
