Acer hopes for profit in winter even with tough situation

Acer chair hopeful for early turnaround

Acer chairman JT Wang chose the unusual venue of his company's Lunar New Year ceremony to make predictions about early 2012 sales. With Digitimes and others in attendance, he thought Acer had a good chance of being profitable in its first quarter of 2012 after a 2011 defined by losses. The Chinese holiday and hard drive shortages would make January a low point, but the rest of the quarter would do well.

Impacts from problems with European bonds were already being factored into the results.

The turnaround isn't guaranteed, but Acer's expectations point to the reversal in the company's philosophy finally taking hold. Throughout 2010 and some of 2011, Acer largely resisted changing its strategy at all to combat tablets and simply hoped the iPad would go away so it could return to selling netbooks and low-end notebooks. After a major restructuring, it now considers tablets a core part of its business and will focus on ultrabooks to not just stake out a clearer alternative but improve Acer's reputation.

Most of the real upswing for Acer is expected in the spring, when ultrabooks like the Aspire S5 are expected to arrive in force.

    Listen to MY predictions

I predicted that HTC would drop from 1300 to 666 and it happened.
I predicted that HP would drop their TouchPad and HP announced it 30 minutes after I said that.
I predicted AAPL would reach 450 (yes, I did sink my $$$ into it) when it was in trading range between $350 and $370.

So...I predict that Acer will trim its work force by 30% by mid-year 2012.

    Acer's usual faux info

Between Acer and Assus, I don't know which has the greater delusions of grandeur.

Trying to hang on to his job before he gets hanged. If it can't be copies they throw up their hands as if THAT will help. Just as there are too many tap dancers looking for work, there are too many computer manufacturers, looking for work.

there will always be a role for Acer

there's always a market for cheap PC crahpola and cheap Apple knockoffs. They probably do that better than most.
