Apple's Siri gets multiple plugs on Big Bang Theory

Big Bang Theory makes Siri a key selling point

Apple got more than a few endorsements this week after The Big Bang Theory made Siri a core part of an episode's plot line. Raj gets an iPhone 4S and quickly falls in love with it, since it appears to respond to every romantic question he has. It agrees to call him "sexy" and suggests places to that he imagines being places for a date.

Everyone else is more than slightly edgy around Raj's apparent 'relationship,' leading Sheldon to make fun of his friend for wanting to keep his "taboo love" a secret.

The show writers did speed up the experience to make it work, but they took care to use commands that will genuinely work with Siri rather than making up commands to fit the plot. Things only go awry when Raj dreams that Siri is a real, beautiful woman and is at a loss when she offers herself to him.

Apple has found its devices at the core of TV sitcom plots before, such as an episode of Modern Family that revolved around the original iPad near its launch. In that case, it's likely Apple directly influenced the episode given the pre-release timing. It's difficult to know how much help Apple might have had in orchestrating the Big Bang Theory story, although the rights clearances and usage make it likely that Apple was at least aware of the episode before it went to air. At least Siri works a little better than handwriting recognition on the Newton (anyone spot the Simpsons reference?)

    one h*** of a promo

on the hottest show on TV. I wonder if Apple paid for the product placement? The great thing is that it just seemed so completely natural, not forced like that episode of Criminal Minds where the big black dude character kept making very forced references to his Dodge Challenger.

Siri was a perfect setup for BBT Raj script. Wish I'd thought of it. The gal that played Siri was more than I expected. Wow!
