Macworld: iPhone cases that open a beer

updated 11:35 pm EST, Fri January 27, 2012

Opena and Intoxicase

The Macworld iWorld expo always hosts a number of unique products, and this year was no exception. MacNN was surprised to find no less than three iPhone cases that double as bottle openers. We checked out the Opena case, along with two 'Intoxicase' models offered by Spicebox.

The Opena case conceals a heavy-duty metal bottle opener that slides out of the case when needed, but otherwise stays tucked away. This seemed to be the most robust beer-opening case that we saw at the show.

Spicebox brought its Intoxicase and Intoxicase Plus, both of which integrated a stationary opener on the back of the case. The former features a metal dome with a cutout that lifts the lid from a bottle, however the design seems like it would be uncomfortable to leave in a pocket. The Plus model features an interesting flip-out hinge that folds flat when not in use.

As much as we think the concept of each case is a bit gimmicky, many people don't like carting around a bottle opener on their keys. For the serious beer drinker, the cases may be a godsend, but the majority of iPhone owners may sleep just fine without a bottle opener built into their phone case.
