Nikon D800 expected February 6, new Coolpix on February 1

Nikon D800 gets firmer release date leak

Nikon's long-expected D800 full-frame DSLR may have a firmer ship date from a collation of tips. The pro camera is now believed with confidence by Nikon Rumors to be unveiled on February 6, with numerous events scheduled on February 7. The timing would be a deliberate prelude to the CP+ camera show starting February 9 in Japan.

While the date is unconfirmed, it follows after Nikon itself briefly posted a look at the D800 on its own page. The D700 is discontinued in Japan and would need a replacement quickly.

The D800 could take a very different tack than the D4. Where the D700 was mostly just a smaller, more accessible version of the D3, the D800 could focus more on absolute resolution than on low noise. A 36-megapixel sensor would make it the highest-resolution digital camera outside of medium format shooting, and it should inherit the improved video performance of the D4.

Before the D800, Nikon is expected to follow its tradition of preceding the pro camera release with a set of Coolpix cameras unveiled on February 1. The focus would be less on the high-end, outside of suspected sequels to the P300 and P500. The S series stylized cameras and a pair of L series entry models would fill out the remainder.
