LG to bring 3D Max smartphone to MWC: report

updated 04:40 pm EST, Fri January 27, 2012

LG Optimus 3D successor to be called 3D Max?

The recently leaked CX2 handset from LG will be coming to the MWC show in Barcelona next month carrying the 3D Max name, the outlet GSM-Israeli reported. Whatever its final name, the phone would replace the Optimus 3D and sport a glasses-free 3D display. The name could also be Optimus 3D Max, though this might not apply to some regional versions.

Early specs include a dual-core, 1.2GHz chip, a 4.3-inch Nova display that's brighter than the Optimus 3D's, and the ability to convert 2D content to 3D. There should be dual five-megapixel cameras on the back that can record 3D videos. The body should also be more slender, losing nearly 0.08 inches (2mm) and coming in at under 0.39 inches (10mm). The same 8GB of internal storage is likely to be present as well. Otherwise, DLNA-supporting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 21Mbps HSPA 3G radio, and an NFC chip are also likely to be onboard. Whether Android 4.0 will be onboard isn't known, but likely.

The handset will likely reach markets in the spring. More information is expected to come at Mobile World Congress in late February.
