Hands on: Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo drives

Drives demonstrated in a daisy-chained setup

Just weeks after announcing its first Thunderbolt hard drives, Western Digital appropriately brought the offerings to show off at the Macworld iWorld expo in San Francisco. Electronista took a close look at several of the company's My Book Thunderbolt Duo drives, which were daisy chained to a Thunderbolt display.

The company used four dual-disk Duos to demonstrated the speed potential when connected as a RAID array. The system consistently pushed 640 MB/s during write operations and over 750 MB/s when reading data. For users who want to use just a single drive, representatives claimed the throughput would reach approximately 250MB/s.

We welcome any new storage devices that take advantage of Thunderbolt technology, which is now standard across Apple's entire computer lineup. We are curious to know the pricing details, which WD has yet to disclose.

These look like really great products. Hopefully Western Digital doesn't once again get the idea to impose junkware embedded in the firmware with these drives.

I'm still waiting on it being available on the Mac Pro. I'm dying to get Thunderbolt on a Mac Pro. It's on the Mac Mini but not the Mac Pro?!?!?!?!?
