Nikon Japan discontinues D300s, D700

updated 12:25 am EST, Thu January 26, 2012

D800 expected to launch in near future

Nikon appears to be in the process of discontinuing its D300s and D700 cameras, which have been added to the "old products" listing on the company's Japanese website. The discontinuations are viewed as an indication that Nikon may be ready to finally release the D400 and D800 models that have appeared in several leaks.

The D400 is believed to represent the successor to the D300s, while the D800 is viewed as the replacement for the D700, though Nikon has yet to confirm details surrounding the new cameras.

Leaks surrounding the D800 suggest the camera will offer a smaller form with sloped shutter controls similar to the D4. Nikon is believed to have chosen a 36-megapixel sensor and geared the device to compete with Canon's EOS 5D Mark II.

Specific launch dates and pricing information for the D400 and D800 remain unclear.
