OpenPandora offers gaming handheld for pre-order

Germany's OpenPandora will begin shipping a handheld UMPC/gaming console in February. The device has been in the works for nearly four years, having suffered through production and shipping delays. It still carries no name and there are 4,000 units slated for shipping in February. The company did ship 2,800 units to date since May, 2010.

The specs include a 4.3-inch resistive touchscreen with an 800x480 resolution, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and two SDHC memory card slots that can hold cards with the OS preloaded. The open-source device runs Linux out of the box and promises over 10 hours of battery life. It can run a full desktop, use Firefox to browse the web, and play games such as Quake 3 Arena.

Tech specs are modest and include a 600MHz TI processor, 256MB of RAM, 512MB of integrated storage space, and a 430MHz TI OpenGL ES 2.1-ready 3D graphics core. Its use of Linux keeps the demands relatively light.

The device can be pre-ordered from Pandora's site now, priced at 375 euros (about $485) for international customers or 445 euros ($576) for European buyers. [via Pocketables]
