Raspberry Pi claims twice iPhone 4S' graphics speed

updated 07:40 pm EST, Wed January 25, 2012

Company boasts of platform performance

Raspberry Pi executive director Eben Upton has made several performance claims regarding the company's micro PCs. The startup argues that the devices outperform NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset, and even doubles the iPhone 4S' performance, when benchmarking graphics capabilities.

"To summarise, BCM2835 has a tile mode architecture - so it kills immediate-mode devices like Tegra on fill-rate - and we've chosen to configure it with a very large amount of shader performance," Upton told GamesIndustry in an interview (sub. required). "So it does very well on compute-intensive benchmarks, and should double iPhone 4S performance across a range of content."

Despite the bold claims surrounding performance, Upton notes that the hardware is not expected to be compatible with Windows 8. The micro PCs are built with an ARM11 chip, however Windows 8 will require an ARMv7 processor.

The Linux-based micro PCs will be available in two variations: a $25 model with 128MB of RAM or a $35 edition that adds an extra USB port, Ethernet port and 256MB of RAM.

"So it does very well on compute-intensive benchmarks, and should double iPhone 4S performance across a range of content."

Broadcom never had any edge in terms of 3D GPU, those claim are bogus and unfounded. Broadcom own site on the BCM2835 doesn't have any bold claims of this kind about their graphics performance.

"To summarise, BCM2835 has a tile mode architecture - so it kills immediate-mode devices like Tegra on fill-rate"

Almost all patent related to tiled based 3D GPU is owned by the PowerVR architecture that Apple licences for their iPhone, and we already know the A4 and A5 smokes the Tegra any time.
