Apple town hall gives staff $500 off of Macs, $250 off iPads

Apple town hall content revealed to be sale

The tease of an Apple town hall meeting has been followed up with apparent confirmation that it was internally focused. CEO Tim Cook was said by 9to5 to have instituted a plan where staff get $500 discounts on Macs and a $250 drop on the price of an iPad. Only the Mac mini would be excluded from the deal, which may well see the systems sold virtually at cost.

To curb abuse, the company will reportedly limit the discount to those who have been employed with Apple for at least 90 days and only let them take advantage of the deal every three years. Apple staff until now have already been getting 25 percent discounts on Macs; it's unknown if they still get that discount outside of the three-year interval.

While not separately confirmed by Apple, the gesture if real would be the second conspicuous change in the company's policies since Tim Cook became CEO. Earlier, he had started up charitable donation matching. The incentives point either to a different managerial style or a a reward for the record-setting profit that has defined much of Apple's recent history.
