Evi app for iOS, Android may mostly match, trump Siri

updated 07:10 pm EST, Mon January 23, 2012

Evi promises to answer complex questions by voice

True Knowledge has developed a voice command app that promises to beat Apple's Siri in key areas. Evi on iOS (99 cents, App Store) and Android (free during beta, Android Market) can answer typical Siri quesitons, such as restaurant recommendations, but specializes in answering answering the less immediate questions that would normally have Siri perform a generic web search. A deep knowledge class system lets it answer age comparisons, provide recipes, and otherwise answer directly.

Like the iPhone 4S system, Evi uses Nuance to handle the voice recognition, but talks to True Knowledge's own engine.

Limitations are those inherent to a third-party app. It can't directly interact with components like Calendar or Reminders and takes longer to launch. Evi has its own browser and can stay self-contained, however, where Siri and Android alternatives like Vlingo still need to switch apps. As an app, it can similarly run on the iPad where Siri is currently locked to one device.

The service is still young and, as of Monday, was having server problems. As an independent platform, it could theoretically go to other platforms, including non-mobile platforms, with little relative effort. [via TechCrunch]

    1-2 stars

This app is getting clobbered in the app store for frequent errors connecting to its server.

    So once again...

Apple is doomed. How many of these "this will catch and surpass Apple in no time" claims do we have to suffer through anyway? Some doofus analyst is now predicting Microsoft mobile will catch and surpass iOS by 2015. Really? REALLY?

Evi shows a lot of promise but at the moment it is not performing. For an alternative that works on the same knowledge base as Evi, try out 'Voice Ask', which has been available for some time and is constantly being improved. See

See also 'Voice Ask', an app that offers a Siri alternative on the same basis as Evi. It also works on any iPhone, iPad, or Android device. See

Evi is following in the footsteps of 'Voice Ask', which has been in the store for some time and has outgrown some of the initial issues that are now plaguing Evi. Check out
