Ovum thinks Android will top iOS in development by 2013

updated 11:10 am EST, Mon January 23, 2012

Analysis claims Android may take top dev spot

Ovum on Monday predicted based on a developer survey that Android would become more important to developers than iOS by the start of 2013. While Apple would still be the other major platform creator to write for, the research firm saw the momentum in hardware leading to Google taking the edge. Ovum didn't give ratios for how much of a lead it expected.

BlackBerry and Windows Phone development were also seeing resurgences, it said, although they would still sit on the periphery.

The claim does have some basis in trends, as Android has caught up in pace after years of trailing behind, at least temporarily. Google still has numerous obstacles to overcome among developers, however, the biases of the store and users towards free apps. Despite a larger device market share, Android apps make a sixth the revenue of iOS apps and have more troubles with discoverability and piracy.

Although not a complete picture, Flurry data suggests many more iOS app starts even at the end of 2011. If so, Apple could see its iOS development grow faster than a stepped up Android process.

    guilty as charged

biased against free apps? Yes, I am and proud of it.
I have a curious question aimed at those who share the OWS mindset wherein you feel you are owed everything for free.
Would you be willing, strictly on a volunteer basis of course, to share my rent, the cost of my food, my computers, my software, my time in development of apps, the development cost of apps that just don't sell because they did not appeal to enough people, the list could go on for pages?
And then, the cost of developing and testing for Android, with its 250+ versions when implemented on all the different devices and versions?

If so, I will give you all the free apps you want. Of course I do need to take into account that those who "deserve" free apps complain more than those who pay for them. Something about that Occupy Wall Street mindset. (disclaimer--if there are Wall Street types who commit individual crimes, then individually convict them, who could have a problem with that?)

    Have a nice day.
------waiting-----waiting---------the only sound is crickets chirping in the dark-----

I thought so. Will stay with iOS, please, please, the rest of you take the Android market, I will be so grateful.
