Sony preps spring 2012 VAIO refresh

Sony in a post-CES update has tweaked several of its VAIO notebooks for the spring. The VAIO Z now has the option of 4G LTE access on Verizon, making it one of the first full-powered notebooks with the choice. The $1,950 ultraportable now comes in a Carbon Fiber Silver color and gets newer Core i5 and i7 processors from the late 2011 upgrade.

The VAIO S gets a similar processor refresh, with most of the updates focusing on visuals. Sony's 13- and 15-inch models now come with a Radeon HD 6470M or 6630M for dedicated video, and the larger model now has a 15.5-inch, 1080p IPS-based display for color accuracy. They ship in early February at prices of $800 for a 13-inch system and $980 for the 15-inch system.

VAIO C models focus less on performance updates and more on artwork. The 14- and 15.5-inch systems have the choice of either a Geometric Black or Kaleidoscope Pink with an engraved look on their lids and palm rests. Prices haven't changed, although Sony is having a short-run promo that gives a nylon notebook sleeve for free through February 4.

One more minor tweak sees the VAIO E lineup get the processor speed updates of the rest of the family.
