BASF, Philips team up on transparent OLED panels

updated 11:40 am EST, Fri January 20, 2012

Transparent OLED panels can be made into sunroofs

A new concept panel made by Philips and in cooperation with BASF has been shown off that can be used in the glass sunroof of cars. It consists of an OLED panel that can emit light or be made translucent or transparent, depending on how much current runs through it. The panel can also be made to accommodate transparent solar cells.

The OLED panels are highly energy efficient and are only 1.8mm (0.07in) thick. The diffused light it creates is soft and doesn't produce harsh shadows.

Based on Philips' Lumiblade OLED tech, the concept panel is a result of the two companies' cooperation since 2006. BASF creates the organo-mechanical materials including dyes that are used in the OLEDs built by Philips. [via PhysOrg]
