M1 begins offering camera-free iPhone 4, 4S

Singapore carrier sells camera-less iPhone 4, 4S

M1, a cellphone operator in Singapore, is now offering a selection of iPhone 4 and 4S handsets that have had both of their cameras removed. This process was necessary in order for army personnel to keep the phones while on base. The modification voids Apple's original warranty, though one from a third party is offered for S$321 (about $252). It will reportedly have similar warranty terms and coverage to Apple.

The phone prices range from $449 (about $352) for an 8GB iPhone 4 on a smartphone plan to S$974 (about $765) for a 64GB 4S on the least expensive two-year contract. M1 won't perform the service for users who bring in their own iPhone. The premium over a camera-equipped handset is S$49 (nearly $38).

The removal procedure is certified by Singapore's Ministry of Defense with an accompanying document. Men in Singapore are conscripted into two years of mandatory military service, so there is plenty of potential demand for such devices. [via CNET]
