Intel offers overclocking protection warranty

updated 02:15 pm EST, Thu January 19, 2012

Unlocked Core i5, i7 overclock warranty offered

Computer chipmaker Intel has just launched its Performance Tuning Protection Plan meant for users who want to overclock their unlocked Core i-series CPUs without worrying about the consequences if they go too far. The plan will replace a single processor if it fails when taken outside of Intel's specifications. This is in addition to Intel's standard three-year warranty, but does require owners to pay a separate fee.

Some provisos apply, such as not being able to buy more than one protection plan for the same CPU, the chip being under its original three-year warranty, and not being able to use it within 30 days of buying the plan to minimize abuse. The plans can be transferred if a CPU is sold to someone else, however. Intel is also said to be offering the program for only six months as a trial to gauge its success.

Prices vary depending on the chip. The Core i5-2500K protection plan costs $20, the Core i7-2600K and 2700K plans are priced at $25, and protection for the high-end Core i7-3930K and 3960X chips is priced at $35 each.
