PS Vita sales dip to 18K in Japan, cloud rivalry with phones

PS Vita sales continue to drop

New Media Create data has made clear that the PlayStation Vita isn't yet threatening most other consoles or smartphones. After a blockbuster launch in December, it has tapered off for a second time in a month to just 18,361 systems as of January 15. Every console's sales dropped off sharply in the same period, but it still sat behind Sony's seven-year-old PSP, the PS3, and Nintendo's 3DS.

The Vita did manage to outsell the Wii, although this came after Nintendo's motion gaming system saw its sales cut by more than two thirds, not a gain from Sony.

Some of the slump might have come from a lack of game titles. Most of the top games were 3DS or Wii titles, with none being for the Vita. A common complaint from Japanese has been the lack of a title in the Monster Hunter series that's considered a fan favorite in the country; the 3DS has Monster Hunter 3G.

Regardless of exact causes, the sales are moderate at most and don't bode well for Sony hoping to regain lost revenue to Android and iOS. Sony has the advantage of higher-priced and higher value games, but it and Nintendo don't manage nearly as many device shipments and have lost revenue just through the sheer volume of games for Apple and Google.

Some hope exists for the American release of the Vita: while it's in the home territory of its smartphone OS opponents, the next launch has the advantage of a considerably stronger game lineup. [via Andriasang]
