2012 Sony smartphone roadmap and prices leak out

updated 08:10 am EST, Wed January 18, 2012

Lid lifted on Sony smartphone 2012 line up

The lid has been lifted on what looks like most of Sony's smartphone roadmap for 2012. A list of model codenames has leaked out of a Sony sales report for the Indian market. However, of the three codenames that have previously been spotted (Kumquat, Nypon, Pepper), and which appear set for an April release, another eight have not yet been sighted until now.

Sony has previously said that it was aiming to make a serious push for a bigger slice of the Android market in 2012. Part of the reason for its acquisition of Ericsson's stake in their decade old partnership was because it wanted more control over the direction it wanted to take in 2012 and beyond. The lineup that has surfaced here also shows only Android models, with no Windows Phone 7 phones in sight.

The LT221 (Nypon) is know to be a relatively high specified handset. It will have a 4.55-inch 720p display as well as a 13-megapixel rear camera. A 4G radio is also expected, while it should be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor matched with at least 1GB of RAM. According to the leaked list, it will be priced at around 370 Euro.

Looking through the list, the highlight model is the Mint, which is apparently scheduled for a September launch. If its purported price is any guide, at 562 Euro, it is shaping up to be Sony's halo phone in 2012. A number of the new Sony handsets are expected to formally debut at the 2012 Mobile World Congress next February where Sony is likely to give us an insight into the next few months of releases.
