Apple education event to have K-12 emphasis, say sources

Bloomberg info expands, reiterate claims

Apple's education event in New York City -- scheduled for tomorrow -- will place an emphasis on growing the educational materials available for the iPad, particularly for K-12 students, say two Bloomberg sources claimed to have "knowledge of the announcement." The people also say that Apple's plans will be revealed by senior Internet software VP Eddy Cue, and involve a set of tools making it easier to publish textbooks and other educational content.

The software is also reportedly designed so that a wide range of people can publish, in a manner similar to Amazon's direct publishing system. Apple is in fact said to want to encourage self-publishers to produce new kinds of teaching tools; high school teachers, for instance, could produce lesson materials, while scientists and historians could craft books that bypass normal publishing routes.

Content should support embedded images and video; Apple will likely promote a modified version of the ePub standard, the sources say. While Apple already uses a custom version of ePub for iBooks, the company may be planning to support some variant of ePub 3, which allows for embedded media as well as hyperlinks. No new hardware is predicted to accompany the event.
