Elpida to team with Micron amid falling DRAM prices

updated 09:40 pm EST, Tue January 17, 2012

Companies threatened by Korean competitors

Chip makers Elpida Memory and Micron Technology are reportedly set to join forces in the memory market. The companies are said to be attempting to combine their production capabilities, which would give the partnership approximately 20 percent market share for DRAM components.

Elpida is said to be facing financial difficulties as DRAM prices continue to fall, due in part to the rising popularity of flash memory and stiff competition from Korean manufacturers such as Samsung.

Elpida has approximately $1.89 billion in debt due by April, according to a Reuters report. Both companies have yet to officially confirm plans to collaborate on memory production.
