Some Transformer Prime users can't upgrade to Android 4.0

OTA update doesn't recognize device serial numbers

Late last month, after several delays, ASUS began shipping its much anticipated Transformer Prime tablet, but with Android 3.2 instead of Android 4.0. The company promised that it would begin offering an over-the-air (OTA) update to early adopters on January 12. ASUS met that deadline, but xda developers reports that owners are experiencing problems with updating their slates.

The problem arises when the OTA can't recognize the slate's serial number and won't update the device. ASUS is aware of the problem. Gary Key, a company representative, has suggested that users try doing a factory reset. If that doesn't work, he suggests waiting about 15 minutes and trying again. Key has acknowledged that this process has worked in a few but not all instances of the problem.

ASUS is still being cautious and has not given an indication as to when there might be a fix for the problem. "As for making statements," comments Key, "until we are sure about the replication of issues and a solid fix for the problem we are not going to make statements that might lead users down the wrong path."

The Transformer Prime is one of the first tablets to feature NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor. It ships with either 32GB or 64GB of flash memory. Battery life is up to 12 hours between charges as a stand-alone device, or up to 18 hours when docked with its signature keyboard. [via Engadget]
