Notion Ink posts early Android 4.0 update, teases new device

updated 07:50 pm EST, Mon January 16, 2012

ICS bugs still being worked out

Notion Ink has posted an early Android 4.0 update for its Adam tablet, though the development team is still working out a number of bugs. The company already offered a beta download, however the alpha build fixes a wide range of problems related to audio, sensors, Bluetooth, HDMI video output and graphics acceleration, among other bugs.

Some of the remaining problems are blamed on the current lack of support from NVIDIA's Tegra components, which powers the Adam. Company CEO Rohan Shravan suggests NVIDIA will need to make changes to its proprietary architecture to fully support Ice Cream Sandwich.

Shravan early last summer suggested a successor to the Adam tablet would be ready by December and unveiled at CES, however the show has passed without any details from Notion Ink. The company has changed its strategy to avoid relying on CES for any press-related activities.

"Hence no public releases from CES, but there will be one coming next week, after which we will be sharing the developments on the next generation," Shravan wrote in a blog post. "Unlike last time where the hardware was mostly done out-house, this time every resistor, IC, bus lane, etc is designed and selected on the very computer working on this blog."

Additional details surrounding the second-generation model remain unclear, though the blog comments and criticisms of NVIDIA suggest the device may not be powered by the latest Tegra hardware.
