Skype 5.5 for Mac beta updates call UI, tweaks performance

updated 05:00 pm EST, Thu January 12, 2012

Makes video in incoming calls optional

Skype has released a new Skype for Mac beta, v5.5. The software includes a new and improved call interface. It also gives Mac users the option of accepting incoming calls with or without video, a feature already present in finished Windows versions of Skype.

Tweaks have been made to call quality as well as the program's stability. People downloading the beta are asked to give feedback, whether through Skype's forums or the public issue tracker.

    Skype has lost it

I am still using their old app and refuse to upgrade. I use Skype for making business calls. I don't need something that takes up most of my screen, for making a call. Their coders are simply the worst. It is the worst Mac app on my machine. Sadly it's essential. The day Google Voice makes a OS X dialer, Skype is deleted.

    huh?

"The software includes a new and improved call interface"

Please enlighten me which part of Skype UI was improved??? I refuse to install that garbage on my computer until they fix the UI and make it somewhat usable. As it stands right now, that software is unusable for me just because of its horrendous "user interface"

    The need a downgrade

I tried Skype 5, for quite a while, and found the interface to be quite bad. Usability has gone downhill since Skype 2.8. So, I downgraded to v2.8, and I am fine. There is not a single feature I want/use on Skype after that, and v2.8 lets me easily dial what I want, do touch tones to get on conf calls, and that's it. Doing those things was suprisingly bad on v5.0. I hope 5.5 is better, but I won't bother checking it out.. past experience has shown they are more interested in adding garbage like facebook integration than making their call management work well.
