MOTU debuts video breakout box with Thunderbolt connectivity

updated 05:30 pm EST, Wed January 11, 2012

HD/SD interface can handle uncompressed video

MOTU, while best known for its audio hardware and software for pro audio, also makes video hardware -- and extended its product line at CES by introducing the HDX-SDI with Thunderbolt, a one rack-space sized pro video interface that enables Thunderbolt-equipped Macs or Windows PCs to capture even uncompressed HD video and features plenty of input and output for video and audio channels. The product is MOTU's first with Thunderbolt technology.

The HDX-SDI supports all levels of camcorder and HD cameras and all standard SD and HD formats, including 1080p30. Users can opt for capturing pixel-for-pixel uncompressed HD via HD-SDI or HDMI, or go with compressed workflows including ProRes, ProRes HQ, Avid DNxHD or other codecs. Final Cut Pro, Media Composer 6, Premiere Pro and other video editing programs can work with the input from the unit.

The box features time code support (LTC, VITC for SD analog, D-VITC for SD digital and embedded), bi-level and tri-level video ref sync, RS-422 machine control, ASC CDL color grading, time code in/out with a front-panel time code display, eight analog quarter-inch TRS connectors for analog audio I/O, eight channels of AES/EBU digital audio I/O, eight channels of SDI and HDMI audio with embedding or de-embedding support, multi-stem 5.1 and 7.1 surround-sound capturing and monitoring and more.

The HDX-SDI is housed in a 1U metal enclosure with removable brackets (for desktop use) and is planned to ship in the spring. Pricing has not yet been announced.
