New addition to the high-end lineup

Sennheiser brought its latest high-end headphones to Las Vegas this week for CES, where the company unveiled the HD 700. Electronista was blown away by the company's flagship HD 800 model that was introduced several years ago at CES, so we made sure to stop by and listen to the latest addition to the HD series.

The 700's frequency response is only slightly narrower than that of the HD 800, though 10Hz on the low end is still below the threshold of human hearing. Both models share an annular design that vibrates a large volume of air for a fuller sound, and we can confirm that both headphones present a wide sound stage.

We listened to a few tracks and found the sound to be very robust but pure, without unnecessary enhancement on the low end. The headphones deserve the "reference quality" description that usually appears in marketing materials for headphones that don't live up to the promise.

For $1000, the HD 700 carries a price tag that is slightly easier to stomach than the $1500 HD 800. The new model is expected to arrive in stores sometime in March.
