B&N drops Nook price $50 with online People subscription

updated 05:05 pm EST, Mon January 9, 2012

Promotion give tablet to subscribers at $200

Barnes & Noble is giving readers $50 off the regular price of a Nook Tablet if they buy the device in conjunction with an online subscription to People magazine. Individuals who commit to a $10 per month annual subscription to the interactive digital edition of the publication can purchase the Nook for $200. The normal price for the device is $250.

B&N launched the Nook Tablet in November. It centers on a seven-inch LG VividView screen that can display 1080p videos (albeit not at native resolution) to support streamed apps such as Hulu Plus. It comes powered by a dual-core processor and Android 2.3.

The Nook Tablet has been extremely popular. It's estimated that almost 1.1 million units of the device may have been sold during the last 2 months of 2011. B&N has projected that it could sell as many as 4.1 million tablets in 2012. Despite its popularity, sales of the Nook significantly trail the competing Amazon Kindle Fire, which may have shipped as many as five million units in the fall of 2011 alone.

The People promotion runs through March 9. Readers may sign up for the deal either at B&N online or at a B&N brick-and-mortar store. Participants must keep their subscription active for one year. Otherwise, an early termination fee will be applied. After one-year, the subscription will renew automatically at the price then in affect, but can be canceled at any time.
