updated 11:30 pm EST, Mon January 9, 2012

Optimized for home entertainment, VOIP

EnGenius have announced a new line of wireless routers under the XtraRange banner that the company says offers "top performance" for 802.11n networking while extending the normal range associated with such devices, using a 200mW radio to outperform traditional 802.11 routers -- though the company has not yet offered specific numbers. The XtraRange line includes three models starting at $45, the first of which is already available through online sellers.

The lineup is also tuned to give bandwidth priority to for game-playing online, HD video, videoconferencing, VOIP calling and downloading large files at up to 300mb per second. The base model, the ESR300H, is a 2.4GHz single-band router that sells for $45. Two other models that will arrive during the first quarter will come with Gigabit Ethernet ports, a USB port for printers or NAS drives, and dual-band technology that lets slower 802.11g devices use one band while 802.11n devices work with the faster 5GHz band.

All three models offer Parental Control features, an SPI firewall, WPA/WPA2 encryption, WPS, L2TP and PPTP VPN tunnelling, VPN pass-through and MAC address filtering. In addition, all three can set up to four separate wireless networks, and the included antennas are detachable to allow even higher-gain antennas for commercial deployment.

The middle model, the ESR600H, will sell for approximately $110, while the high-end model (which adds EnGenius' own shAir support for USB speakers) will sell for around $130. The ESR300H is already available now via online dealers.
