Nokia Lumia 900 hits ATT soon

Nokia at its CES press event unveiled its expected first Windows Phone for the US, the Lumia 900. The hardware is just the second phone on the OS with LTE-based 4G and upgrades beyond the Lumia 800 in other ways. A larger 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED gives it a visibly larger view, and a front f2.4 camera joins the eight-megapixel f2.2 camera carrying over to the new model.

The 1.4GHz Snapdragon and wrap-around polycarbonate plastic body carry over from the 800, although at the larger screen size give a thinner look. Nokia is providing a slightly updated version of Windows Phone 7.5 with custom apps from companies like Univision and is also pushing to get exclusives or firsts, such as 20 EA games.

AT&T is the sole choice of carrier for the Lumia 900 so far and promises a release sometime in the "coming months." Rumors have put it in shops on or near March 18. During the event, CEO Stephen Elop wouldn't commit to pricing other than to say it would do so "aggressively."

The Lumia 900 represents Nokia's largest and most significant commitment to the US to date. While it has had a trickle of smartphones on the US in recent months, it has been virtually absent from high-profile smartphones for years, shifting focus only with recent CEO Elop. AT&T's wireless head Ralph de la Vega called it a "comeback" and implied the Lumia 900 could vie with the iPhone and Android for attention where it's usually been relegated to the sidelines in the past.
