LG prices Spectrum, talks TVs, fridges, more
At its press conference at CES on Monday morning, LG revealed details on much of it key upcoming gear and plans, including a commitment to cut greenhouse gases by 2020 and its Cinema 3D Smart TV range, including the thinnest and lightest 55-inch OLED TV. They will grow, and include 55-, 60-, 72- and 84-inch screen sizes. All will have 1mm thick bezels and be 28mm thick.
The TV will be 4mm thick and weigh just 16.5lbs, making it the thinnest and lightest in the industry, LG boasted. It will remain compatbile with LG's current 3D glasses and offer 1080p resolution along with stunning colors and tech specs. Prices and ship dates remain unknown, however.
The Magic Remote used on some of the company's connected TVs will gain a navigation wheel for better scrolling through the web along with voice recogntinon for text input. LG will also unveil a Microsoft Kinect-like camera and microphone accessory that will sit atop TVs and recognize gestures for navigation. The Smart Share feature of the TVs will let users stream content to them from notebooks and smartphones will get the industry's first WiDi radio from Intel.
The company will also develop its own quad-core L9 chipset to power its Smart TVs in 2012. The 2D to 3D conversion will be enhanced, and a 3D sound zooming and 3D depth control adjustment feature will be introduced as well. The former will match the video's 3D effect by making the user feel closer to the action.
The Google TV-powered LGSmart TVs will get unique apps developed by LG.
LG also revealed prices for the Spectrum smartphone due at Verizon on January 19. The phone will cost $200 on a two-year contract and connect to the 4G LTE network. It gets a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 4.5-inch, True HD IPS touchscreen. It will stream ESPN high-definition sports videos. LG promised more phone info for the MWC event in February.
Finally, on the appliance end, ing home energy and appliance end, some interesting tidbits included a commitment to connect the device to the power grid for better poer managment.
The company's flagship, french-doored fridge will get a unique Blast Chiller feature that is said to be able to cool a can of soda in under five minutes.
