Acer outs S5 as 'world's thinnest' ultrabook, Timeline Ultra

updated 05:15 pm EST, Sun January 8, 2012

Acer intros two ultrabook-class PCs at CES

Acer ahead of its formal keynote has unveiled two ultrabook-class systems. The Aspire S5 is billed as the world's thinnest ultrabook and measures just under 0.6 inches thick. The black, magnesium-and-metal body weighs 2.97 pounds. Along with the thinnest, Acer touts the S5 as one of the first Windows-based ultrabooks to carry Thunderbolt, which it backs with USB 3.0.

Among the claimed edges over others are an Instant On wake that brings it from sleep in 1.5 seconds and an Always Connect feature that can have it handle e-mail and social network features even when the system is asleep. A smartphone can remotely wake the notebook.

Ports are hidden beneath the hinge and are triggered with a MagicFlip key.

The notebook is due to ship with Ivy Bridge-based Core processors and so won't ship until sometime in the spring.

The Timeline Ultra is a 14- and 15-inch model that carries both optical and hard drives. It too uses Intel Core processors, and has Dolby Home Theater audio and eight hours of battery life. They're slightly thicker at 0.8 inches. They use existing technology and should ship earlier, in the winter.

    Not the thinnest...

It ain't the thinnest, it just has a bit which is that thin: the rest of the machine is thicker than that and I bet you won't find any ads or documentation for the public that call it the thinnest. The test surely has to be creating a slot in a piece of metal that has an aperture as wide as the thickness Acer claims and then see if the thing can pass through. No prizes for guessing it won't be able to...
