Leak shows Polaroid leaping into tablets, e-readers at CES

updated 06:55 pm EST, Sat January 7, 2012

Polaroid to take on iPad and Kindle Fire at once

A leak on Saturday has suggested that Polaroid is the next company to try its hand at tablets. Appropriate to the instant photography legacy, a full-size Android tablet seen by Engadget would focus heavily on the camera. It would have both front and rear cameras, but unlike most any other tablet, it would have a flash on the front as well.

A front-facing speaker would itself be unusual.

Following the tablet would be a smaller device likely intended as a color e-reader akin to the Amazon Kindle Fire. Less still is known about what it would involve, although it too is expected to come with Android.

Polaroid in its reborn form has used CES to introduce products before, and it may choose to unveil the tablets at the Las Vegas show next week. Launch details have yet to be uncovered.

The introduction points to a second wave of manufacturers trying their hand at tablets during CES. Dozens of tablets were unveiled last year after the industry was caught off-guard by the iPad. None of those at the 2011 show ever gained enough share to challenge Apple.

    Just like the Chinese saying

For each wave, there is another one pushing right behind it.

    Yearly wave of of wannabes

Re: "The introduction points to a second wave of manufacturers trying their hand at tablets during CES. "

I think we'll be seeing an annual crop of wannabes. Each one thinking "If we put a flash on the front, our pad will stand out from the rest." Or "If we can just keep the price below $200 our pad will sell."

If only it were that simple. Good luck, newbies.

CES does not equal coming to market

There are plenty of items shown at CES that never make it to market because no retail channels want to sell it. I think thios will be one of them...

    following the herd

This is why Polaroid is doomed– they are completely out of new ideas, and all they do now is follow the pack. Late. Time and time and time again the market has shown that we don't want another tablet. What are the only two companies to even do marginally well at this? Apple and Android. its not about the HARDWARE, its about the CONTENT! What makes Polaroid think they can succeed where Samsung, RIM etc. failed? A flash? Wooooo, how exciting. See ya around Polaroid, its been nice knowing you.
