Swann intros RC helicopter with iOS tilt controls

updated 12:30 am EST, Fri January 6, 2012

Uses IR adapter, app for maneuvers

Security and RC product maker Swann has debuted three new RC helicopters, including two that can record videos or still photos while in flight and one model, the i-Fly Micro Lighting, that includes a three-channel infrared adapter and companion app (free) to allow iOS devices to control the helicopter either by using on-screen buttons or the iDevice's tilt controls. The helicopter also comes with a full IR dual-joystick remote control.

The i-Fly Micro Lighting ($70), like the new Sky Eye ($100) and Black Swann ($100) gets up to eight minutes of flying time from a charge and features built-in gyro technology, trim adjustment and 6-way multidirectional flying. The helicopter sports a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, while the included full remote runs on six AA batteries (not included).

All three models are designed for indoor flying for ages 14 and up, with the Sky Eye and Black Swann able to capture video or stills and copy them onto computers using an included USB cable for uploading to social networks. All three are available now from Fry's Electronics as well as the company's website. Other major retailers will be added soon.

    cool beans

These are cool helios. I bought a "Micro Lighting" model at a local store on a special (not Swann branded, but exactly the same thing at less than 1/2 the price). Due to the price, I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. It is far better constructed than any other low cost RC helio I've seen at any other department type store, and it flies great! If you want to dip your toe into RC flying things, this is a great place to start without breaking the bank. I suggest looking around to see if you can find the "Micro Lighting" for less than $70. When not on "special" a price between $40-$50 would be quite reasonable.
