Tobii Gaze interface to steer Windows 8 with eyesight

Tobii apples Gaze interface to Windows 8 Metro

Tobii, known for its partnership with Lenovo on an eye-controlled notebook, has now introduced its Gaze interface for Windows 8 Metro. The technology combines touchpad inputs and looking at an app to interact with it, and allows seven primary touch commands of Windows 8, including select, zoom, scroll and more. Eye-tracking hardware will determine at which area of the screen a user is looking and will place the cursor in that area when a user places his finger on the touchpad.

The interface is said to be more efficient than simple touch input as a user's fingers get in the way, CEO and co-founder of Tobii Henrik Eskilsson said. Mouse or touchpad input alone is slower, as users need to scroll across the screen. Applying the technology to Windows 8 Metro interface is even more efficient thanks to the large tiles present on the home screen.

The Tobii Gaze interface will be demonstrated at CES next week.
