Fujifilm unveils DSLR-like XS-1 with fixed lens

Fujifilm has launched the XS-1, a new high-end camera that is now available in the US. The company is touting it as a "premium, high performance DSLR-styled long zoom camera," which now sits alongside the X100 and the X10 in its X-Series range. It will suit users looking for a DSLR-like experience, but who don't wish to interchange lenses.

The X-S1 is fitted with a fixed 26x manual zoom lens with a range of 24-624mm. It has a variable maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.6, with a 2/3-inch that funnels light to its 12-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor. The lens allows users to capture subjects at a distance, yet also enables close range photos with objects as close as 1 centimeter from the lens using its super macro mode. ISO sensitivity extends from 100 to 3,200, though it is able to reach ISO 12,800 if shooting lower resolution images.

Other highlights of the XS-1 include its ability to shoot at up to 7fs in high-speed mode at full resolution, or up to 10 fps when shooting in 6-megapixels. It can also shoot video in 1080p at 30fps video using H.264 encoding while recording audio in stereo. As can be expected with a contemporary high-end camera, it will also shoot RAW stills and gives users full manual control through a dedicated mode dial. On the rear of the device is a 3-inch 460k-pixel tilting LCD that also features a sensor that automatically switches the viewfinder on as a user's head gets near to it.

The Fujifilm XS-1 will ship from the end of January for $800.
