Verizon more than doubles iPhone sales

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo in remarks at a Citigroup media and telecoms conference revealed the highest-ever sales rate for iPhones on a US carrier. Slipping out information before the actual quarterly results, the executive mentioned 4.2 million iPhones being sold in the fall. The amount was nearly twice as many as the 2.3 million maximum Verizon had seen before and just above an all-time high of 4.1 million, set by AT&T last fall.

A total of 2.2 million LTE devices also activated in the fall, Shammo said. The amount usually includes phones, tablets, and hotspots, revealing that Verizon's combined 4G Android roster will have half or less of the sales of Apple's lineup.

AT&T, C Spire, and Sprint haven't yet weighed in on their own numbers, although AT&T in the several months of early competition on iPhone sales has usually sold more devices than Verizon. Sprint through its size is likely to be the smallest of the group, but it has dropped repeated hints that it was also seeing strong sales.

At such a rate, Apple could be on track to roughly double its iPhone shipments in the fall. AT&T and others saw a lull in sales during the summer as customers waited for the iPhone 4S, but the demand at Verizon may have increased disproportionately and could be reflective of interest on other networks.

The climbs could put a significant squeeze on Android partners. Samsung hasn't given clues as to how well its lineup is doing. HTC, however, is already anticipating a large hit now that its devices aren't usually top billing at the carriers and that Sprint is no longer partly sheltering it from iPhone competition.

    4.2 million?

    4.2 million shipped. Not sold.

Verizon didn't use the word "shipped," and it doesn't really make sense for their business. So why does the headline here say that? Obviously they sold them. Verizon doesn't ship phones, Apple does. And I'm not sure what Wrenchy's point is. Does he really think there are stacks of unsold iPhones gathering dust somewhere?
