Apple TV sets could hit 42 inches or more, report says

updated 12:25 pm EST, Wed January 4, 2012

May dispel rumors of smaller sets

Apple is working on a TV set measuring 42 inches "or larger," according to a USA Today source. The person is said to have worked at Apple, and claims that the unit is an LCD with built-in Wi-Fi. Jonathan Ive -- the company's senior VP of industrial design -- is moreover said to have a 50-inch TV sitting in his design studio.

USA Today cites "a person who worked in the Apple TV group" and two TV industry sources as confirming that a major obstacle has been securing content deals. Apple is allegedly still in confidential talks, but their progress is unmentioned. Some analysts have suggested that Apple may want to offer a-la-carte content subscriptions, an approach that would likely engender resistance from an industry used to selling bundles to cable and satellite providers.

The new report may contradict earlier claims that Apple has been working on sets below the 40-inch threshold. In the rest of the market, though, most high-end TV sets measure at least 40 inches, which may make it unlikely that Apple would debut something smaller. Executives with the company have regularly positioned their products as premium.
