Classpad offers new lower-cost tablet in India

Dehli-based company Classteacher Learning Systems has launched the Android 2.2 touting Classpad, a range of lower-cost tablet set to take on DataWind's Aakash, a $35 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet. While it will be priced above the Aakash, the new tablets are up to 1GHz faster at 1.3GHz than the cheaper tablet and will have options for 4GB and 8GB of storage. The Classpad tablets will also come in a range of sizes including 7-, 8- and 10-inch variations.

"Classpad's user friendly interface makes it convenient for the students and teachers to get acquainted with the application. It is equipped with software that is designed to integrate smoothly with an existing school platform. Classpad tablet provides the content in a 'school friendly' manner by supporting commonly used school applications," said the company in a press release.

The company hopes to attract schools to its tablets because of their education tailored software and interface, as well as its better hardware specifications including the faster CPU, better touchscreen display and a superior battery life offering up to six hours of use.

However, the Classteacher CEO Rohit Pande said that the company would be happy to leave the production of hardware to other manufacturers if they offered a similar device for a similar price.

"If other tablet players like Aakash and Samsung come out with tablets that have decent specification in terms of hardware and are affordable we will explore a tie up with them so that we don't have to worry about the hardware and concentrate on we do the best - that's education content."
