PS Vita already running Sega Genesis games in emulation

PS Vita runs Genesis mutiple layers deep

Attempts to get unofficial PS Vita code running took their next step this weekend after video proof emerged of Sony's system running Sega Genesis games. Picodrive, the offshoot of a competition for a classic console emulator on the PSP, can run games like the Sonic series on the Vita using the official PSP emulator and the Half Byte Loader. It doesn't yet run perfectly and is plagued by stuttering sound, although video performance is very smooth.

The sustainability of the code isn't certain. Sony can require updates and Internet access for the Content Manager app used to load the apps, possibly blocking access if Sony develops a way to close off the code.

The examples at least show that full apps are possible, even if emulated, without having to go to the PlayStation Store. Sony has tried to discourage this on the PS3 under piracy claims and will likely do so again with the Vita. Amateur developers currently have an advantage in lead time and may make more progress before Sony can respond. [via Tiny Cartridge]
