Apple NYC event about iBooks, seen as minor industry meet

updated 10:35 pm EST, Mon January 2, 2012

Apple mystery NYC event already toned down

Apple's mystery New York City event this month is less ambitious than speculated, an outside source corroborated Monday. It would center on publishers in the iBookstore, TechCrunch said, and would be "minor." As such, the event would be more for the publishers themselves and not the public.

The actual substance of the meeting wasn't yet apparent from the new rumor. Minor changes wouldn't likely touch on any controversial issues, such as Apple's subscription revenue demands, or on core software revisions.

Apple's most commonly expected, though not confirmed, publishing-related change may be the iPad 3's new display. At 2048x1536, it could push publishers to re-optimize their content and might influence how future magazine apps are distributed. With the device's launch rumored for March, Apple might want to have extra-sharp periodicals available by the time the new tablet ships.

    More platforms

Ebooks that people buy from Amazon run on almost every digital device around. It'd be great if Apple used this event to announce that iBookstore purchases at least ran on Macs. This iDevice-only limitation is getting old.
